Dealing with Anger
There are many emotions that we may be feeling after the
terrorist events of the past year. Many of us feel sad, depressed
and violated. But under all of this is a cancer that will rip apart our
souls--Anger.
It is okay to feel angry. Jesus was angry at the money
changers in the temple and kicked them out by force. Anger must be
directed, though, at the right thing and must not dictate our actions. It is
okay to be angry at the evil that has come upon us and at those people who dare
say they are acting on God's behalf to kill people. But anger leads to
hatred and violence that can be targeted at the wrong people.
Here are some thoughts to help you deal with the anger over
terrorism:
- Who are you angry at? All Muslims? We must deal
with the fact that this action was taken by an extreme group of Muslims who
believe they will go straight to heaven if they kill in the name of
god. Your Muslim neighbor most likely condemns this action and is embarrassed
and hurt that a fellow Muslim would kill people in the U.S.
- Focus your anger on a constructive action. Let your anger
cause you to try and share the Gospel with Muslims so that they may come to
know Christ as their personal savior. Or let your anger motivate you
do donate time, money, food, blood or energy to the rescue and clean-up
efforts in the areas affected.
- Pray to God that He will take away your anger and replace
it with compassion for those who do not know Him. Ask Jesus to soften
your heart and embrace unbelievers. If you hate or harm a Muslim
unbeliever, you are no different from the men who killed our brothers and
sisters.
- If you continue to have trouble with your anger, talk to
your Pastor or a close brother in Christ. None of us can go through
this without the support of one another.
